Okami Video Game Review

Platforms:

Okami was originally released for PS2, and remastered for Wii, PS3, PS4 and most recently, the Switch.

Storyline:

100 years ago, a wolf named Shiranui and a swordsman named Nagi fought Orochi, an 8 headed serpent/demon. Shiranui was mortally wounded in the battle and died shortly after. Shiranui was reincarnated by the wood sprite Sakuya as Amaterasu so he could to stop Orochi once more. On the way to slaying Orochi, Amaterasu revives Sakuya’s Guardian Saplings to purify the land of evil.

Genre/Format:

Okami is an single player action adventure game much like the Legend of Zelda.

Difficulty Level:

Okami’s difficulty level is interesting. Okami’s common enemies are very easy while the bosses are much harder. It is important to always carry around extra food to heal yourself in the event of a emergency.

Age Restrictions:

There are a few non-PG things that happen in the game. But, they take a very short time to get over with. I would say this game is 12-13+.

Average Length of the Game:

I enjoyed the length of Okami. Many reviewers say that Okami is way too long, but I disagree. The average length of an Okami playthrough is about 36 hours. I do not want to get a game and finish that the same day. Finishing a game you spent lots of time on feels much more satisfying than a game you spent an hour on.

Saving:

The saving mechanism is the worst part of the game. You have to go to a saving platform called an Origin Mirror. Okami is designed for longer play sessions, and during most of the game you will not have easy access to Origin Mirrors. This makes playing Okami on the Nintendo Switch much less convenient if you are on the go.

Graphics:

The graphics are one of the best things in the game. Okami looks like a Japanese ink painting(sumi). The game was originally supposed to have realistic graphics, but the PS2 was not powerful enough to do so. The graphics make you feel immersed in the game nevertheless. It is fun to find cool and pretty areas in the game and screenshot them.

Final rating:

My final rating of this video game is 4.9/5. This game is a must-have if you like action-adventure video games and the Legend of Zelda. Even if you have not played any games of this genre, this is a great game to introduce you to this type of video game.
